MET HAIR instructions to complete all operations by September 20 to start commercial mining pits

Public Mining Sites and Commercial Sites: Following the instructions given by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to provide the necessary sand to the people of the state at cheap prices and to completely eliminate illegal mining activities, the Mining Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hair has asked the department to find other new places for public quarries and till September 20. Instructions have been given to start commercial quarries.

In a meeting with the officials of the department at Punjab Bhawan, the Mining Minister said that the state government is committed to provide the required sand to the people at cheap prices. All necessary actions for approvals to start 40 clusters with 67 commercial pits should be completed by monsoon season so that they can be started from September 20. Out of the 40 clusters auctioned, technical bidding has been done so far for 32 clusters and financial bidding is still on. The government is giving sand to people from both public and commercial quarries at a price of Rs 5.50 per cubic foot.

Gurmeet Singh Meet Hare further informed that till now 60 public wells have been dedicated to the people of the state by the Chief Minister and 13 more new public wells are being prepared to start soon. He directed the department to find new places to open more public wells so that the needs of the people can be met. The work of approvals in this regard should be expedited. Pending environmental clearances should be taken up immediately.

The Punjab Mining Minister asked the officials of the department to intensify the campaign to completely stop illegal mining activities. Negligence in this matter will not be tolerated. He said that drone services should be taken to make the checking work more efficient and should be started from Rupnagar district as a pilot project. He said that from 15 April 2022 to 4 August 2023, 716 cases related to illegal mining have been registered. The Minister of Mines further said that HDFC Hi-tech cameras are being installed at the check posts out of the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.

Secretary of the department Gurkirat Kripal Singh, Director DPS Kharbanda, Chief Engineer HS Mahindiratta apart from SEs and all the districts were present in the meeting.
