Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma resigns

ShillongNational People’s Party (NPP) chief Konrad K. Sangma met Meghalaya Governor Fagu Chauhan on Friday and staked claim to form the government in the state. The outgoing chief minister of the state, Sangma claimed that he has a clear majority in the 60-member assembly with the support of over 32 MLAs. However, he refused to give any information about the allies.

Addressing a press conference before leaving for the Raj Bhavan, Sangma said, “We have a clear majority. BJP has already given support. Some others have also given their support.” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Ernest Mowry told PTI that the NPP has the support of 34 MLAs, including Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Independents and BJP MLAs are involved.

Asked whether the NPP would seek the support of any other party, Mowry said it was unlikely as the necessary support to form the government has been secured. Mowry also claimed that the new government would take oath on March 7 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be present at the event.

Meghalaya went to polls on 59 assembly seats on February 27. Election results were announced on Thursday, with the NPP emerging as the single largest party by winning 26 seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the NPP, has won 11 seats, down from six in the 2018 election.

The Congress and Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress have won five each, while the BJP has won two seats. Newly formed party Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) won four seats, HSPDP and PDF two each, while two independent candidates also won. (agency)
