Purnia Patta Mela: Regarding marriage, strange traditions are followed across the country, but do you know that there is a fair in Purnia, Bihar, where boys choose the girl of their choice.
This fair is known as Patta Mela and here boys propose marriage to the girl of their choice by giving them paan.
This tradition is more than 150 years old
The history of this temple is more than 150 years old, established in Maliniya Diyara village of Banmankhi subdivision in Purnia, Bihar. Unmarried boys and girls take great interest in this traditional fair and apart from Bihar, people from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Nepal also come here.
Every year in the month of April, this fair is organized mainly by the tribals. Boys and girls who reach it have the freedom to choose a life partner of their choice. The boys who come to the fair propose marriage by giving paan to the girl of their choice and if the girl eats paan, it means that she also likes the boy.
After accepting the boy’s proposal at the fair, the girl moves in with the boy with the consent of her family members. Soon after this, in the presence of both the families, the boy and the girl are married according to the tribal customs.
Punishment for refusal after marriage is fixed
The former chief said that the boy-girl has to fulfill one condition for marriage and accordingly they will be married according to the tribal tradition. Also, nature has to obey its will. If one refuses to marry after being favored in the fair, he is punished according to the laws of the tribal society.
