Mansa: A mother and her 10-month-old innocent son were burnt alive for dowry in Burj Bhaliake village of Punjab’s Mansa district. The incident happened on Monday morning. The police registered a case against four persons including the husband on the statements of the deceased’s father and arrested the accused husband. On the other hand, the husband says that his wife has set herself on fire.

Najar Singh, a resident of village Chak Hira Singh Wala of district Bathinda, told in his complaint to the Jhunir police station that six years ago he had married his daughter Pawandeep Kaur (28) to Harpreet Singh, a resident of village Burj Balaya of district Mansa. During the marriage, she had given dowry beyond her capacity. Pawandeep and Harpreet also have a 10-month-old son named Gurkeerat Singh.

Najar said that since marriage, her in-laws used to beat her daughter to bring more dowry. He also fulfilled their demand many times. He said that on Monday he received a call from the girl’s sister-in-law Jaspal Kaur that Pawandeep and Harpreet were fighting. After that, they reached the village of Burj Bhaliyake, when the daughter’s in-laws told that daughter Pawandeep and grandson Gurkirat have been admitted first to Mansa and then to AIIMS Bathinda. When he reached AIIMS with his family, both mother and son had died.

Ganeshwar Kumar, in-charge of Jhunir police station, said that on the statements of Najer Singh, a case has been registered against the deceased’s husband Harpreet Singh, mother-in-law Chinder Kaur, Jeth Binder Singh and Nand Jashpal Kaur and husband Harpreet Singh has been arrested. The Jhunir police have handed over both the bodies to the heirs after the post-mortem.
