Mumbai, A magistrate court in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has said that Union Minister Narayan Rane being an influential person in the political field, the action taken against the then Chief Minister of the state Uddhav Thackeray in 2021 is “unparliamentary”. Was aware of the consequences of the remarks, but does not amount to promoting enmity under the provisions of law, as they did not target any community.

The court on Saturday discharged Rane in the case, saying the material and documents provided did not prove the offenses against Rane, hence the allegations leveled against the accused were found to be “baseless”. It said the statement of the accused can be termed as “controversial and politically insensitive”, which is not expected from a Union minister.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (Raigad-Alibaug) S. W. Ugale made the comments on Saturday while acquitting Rane. The detailed order became available Sunday. “Suffice it to say that he (Rane) is a person of influence and whatever he speaks, he is aware of its reaction,” the magistrate said.

He had made an unparliamentary statement against the then Chief Minister of the State and being an influential person in the political field and having a long experience in politics, he was fully aware of the consequences of these words and the impact it could have on the society.” But the court also said that no community has been mentioned in this statement. An FIR was registered against Rane at Mahad in Raigad district in 2021 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

He was arrested from Ratnagiri district for his remarks. Rane had said, “It is shameful that the chief minister (Uddhav Thackeray) does not know about the year of independence. He turned back during his speech to ask how many years had passed since independence. Had I been there, I would have slapped (him) hard.” He had claimed that Thackeray, in his address to the people of the state on August 15, had forgotten how many years had passed since independence. Four FIRs were registered against Rane in Maharashtra for this remark.
