NashikMaharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that the coalition government of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is valid and will continue in power. He made this comment in the context of forecasting the fall of the present government by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction.

Fadnavis said that the present government which came to power in June 2022 has come with constitutional rules and regulations. Addressing the state BJP executive in northern Maharashtra’s Nashik district, the deputy chief minister said he was confident that the Supreme Court would give a verdict “in our favour”. He made this remark in the context of a petition filed by the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction against 16 MLAs of the Shinde faction.

Without naming the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction, the senior BJP rejected criticisms that the government was formed illegally and several members (of the Shinde-led Balasahebchi Shiv Sena) would be disqualified (by the Supreme Court). Fadnavis said, “This message is being circulated so that even the remaining 10-15 MLAs of the Thackeray faction do not revolt. Whatever we did, we did according to the rules and under the Constitution. Our government is not a ‘traitor’, but a ‘Khuddar’.”

He alleged that the rule of Maha Vikas Aghadi (November 2019 to June 2022) would be known for corruption in which no development work took place. Fadnavis said, “Not a single development project was made in the previous government.” He claimed that the Shinde-led government would not only complete its term, but also return to power in the next elections with an absolute majority.

Significantly, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction leaders Aditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut had said that the current government would not be able to complete its term. Fadnavis said the apex court would begin hearing on February 14 the matter related to the disqualification of the rebel MLAs. He said, “We are playing 20-20 match of public service, while Maha Vikas Aghadi government was playing T-20 match of corruption.” (agency)
