NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said one advantage of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s attempt to form a government with his nephew and NCP leader Ajit Pawar was that it ended President’s rule in Maharashtra in 2019. Would Uddhav Thackeray have taken oath as the Chief Minister if the President’s rule had not been revoked?

Reacting to the Election Commission’s decision to declare Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s fractious faction as the real Shiv Sena, Pawar said differences are common in politics but it has never happened in the country when the party’s name and symbol were used to misuse power. People have snatched it. The senior leader said, “When there was a split in the Congress, two organizations namely the Congress (I) and the Congress (S) emerged. I was the President of the Congress (S) and Indira Gandhi was the President of the Congress (I). At that time I had the right to use the name of Congress. Citing his experience, the NCP chief said that whenever there is excessive misuse of power and an attempt is made to suppress a party, the public stands with that party. “I recently visited several districts and found that though the leaders have left the Shiv Sena, the staunch Shiv Sainiks (party workers) are still with Uddhav Thackeray and this will be proved in the elections,” he said.
Pawar declined to comment on the court
Pawar said, “Who took the decision? Was it the (Election) Commission, or someone who is guiding the Commission? Such decisions were not made in the past. The role of some bigger force behind this cannot be ruled out.” The NCP declined to comment on what could be the verdict of the apex court in the matter. “It is the judiciary and we believe in the judiciary,” he said.
