New Delhi: Kerala cadre 1989 batch IPS officer Nitin Aggarwal was appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday night. This post was lying vacant for about five months. Agarwal is currently posted as Additional Director General of Operations at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) headquarters in Delhi.

After the retirement of Pankaj Kumar Singh in December 2022, the country’s prestigious Border Security Force (BSF) now has its new chief. The Cabinet’s appointment follows a late-night order by the Appointments Committee (ACC), which approved the Home Ministry’s proposal to appoint Nitin Agarwal as the new Director General of the BSF. Let it be known that CRPF DG Sujoy Lal Thausen has been holding the additional charge of BSF for the last five months.

Who is Nitang Agarwal?

Nitin Aggarwal is a 1989 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Kerala cadre. He is currently posted as Additional Director General of Operations in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). While serving with ITBP he was promoted to the post of ADG in 2014.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Agarwal did his B.Tech (1983-1987) and M.Tech (1987-1989) from IIT Delhi. They like to play tennis. He has served in various capacities such as IG Training in ITBP, IG Shastra Seema Bal and ADG-Police in Kerala Police. He also served as an Assistant Engineer in the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers during the early years of his career.

Appointment order

The appointment order issued late night read, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has appointed Mr. Nitin Agarwal, IPS, presently serving as Additional DG, CRPF, Director General, Border Security Force, Ministry of Home Affairs. The proposal has been approved. (BSF) with pay at level-16 of the pay matrix from the date of joining the post upto 31.07.2026, i.e. till the date of his retirement or further orders, whichever is earlier.” This means Agarwal will retire as DG-BSF in 2026 if the extension is not granted.

As Agarwal has been elevated to Level-16 of Pay Matrix as per the new order and is likely to get increased pay in his new role. Under the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, the pay range for level 16 is Rs.2,05,400 and Rs.2,24,400. This is in addition to the perks and miscellaneous allowances they will get in their new role. As per 7th Pay Commission, officers above pay matrix 14 are entitled to official vehicle or transport allowance at the rate of DA of Rs 15,750 per month. Officers are also entitled to government bungalows with essential security.

It may be mentioned that the Border Security Force is the premier security agency of the country which is mainly tasked to protect the 4,096 km-long international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. In addition to performing various duties in internal security domain. BSF has more than 2.65 lakh jawans working in various capacities.
