Ajab Gajab: Mongolian Nadam is inextricably linked with the nomadic civilization of the Mongols, who long occupied the vast plains of Central Asia.
Oral traditions, performing arts, national cuisine, crafts and cultural forms such as long singing, khuomei overtone singing, bee baelgi dance and morin khur fiddle also feature prominently during Nadam.
Mongolians follow special rituals and practices during the festival, such as wearing unique costumes and using special equipment and sports items.
The festival honors the participating sportsmen, sportswomen and children who compete and the winners are awarded with titles for their achievements.
Ceremonial praise songs and poems are dedicated to the participants in the events. Everyone is allowed and encouraged to participate in Naadam, thus promoting community participation and unity.
All three types of games are directly related to the lifestyle and living conditions of the Mongols. This is traditionally done by family members through home schooling.
However, formal training systems for wrestling and archery have recently developed. Naadam ceremonies and rituals also instill respect for nature and the environment.
