In 11 months, this is how Punjab Police broke the back of drug traffickers

Punjab Police action on Drug Smugglers: It is about to complete a year since the decisive war on drugs launched on the guidelines of Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Mann to eradicate the menace of drugs. Under this campaign, Punjab Police has arrested 14952 drug smugglers including 2132 big fish since 5 July 2022. The police have registered a total of 11147 FIRs, of which 1313 are related to commercial quantity.

Addressing the press conference, Inspector General of Police Headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the police teams from across the state set up checkpoints on sensitive routes in drug-affected areas and recovered 987.75 kg of heroin by conducting cordon and search operations. In addition, Punjab Police teams recovered 147.5 kg of heroin from ports in Gujarat and Maharashtra, taking the total recovery of heroin to 1135.25 kg in just 11 months.

Apart from recovering a large consignment of heroin, the IGP said that the police recovered 731 kg of opium, 840.76 kg of ganja, 350.40 quintal of poppy and 62.49 lakh pills/capsules/injections/vials from across the state. The police have also recovered drug money worth Rs 11.83 crore from the drug smugglers caught in these 11 months.

Meanwhile while giving the weekly briefing, the IGP said that in the last one week, the police registered 234 FIRs, including 31 related to commercial quantity, arrested 308 drug traffickers/suppliers and seized 33.73-kg heroin, 13.90-kg Opium, 16.12 kg of ganja, 5.85 quintal of poppy, 39004 tablets/capsules/injections/vials of pharma opioids, drug money worth Rs.10.48 lakhs were recovered.

He said that with 10 more fugitives arrested in NDPS cases in the last one week, the total number of arrests after the special drive launched on July 5, 2022 to arrest POs/fugitives has now reached 906.

It may be mentioned that the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab Gaurav Yadav had given strict instructions to all the CPs/SSPs to thoroughly investigate the back-and-forth links in each case, especially related to the recovery of drugs, even if Even a small quantity of drugs may have been recovered from them.

It may be mentioned that on the guidelines of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to make Punjab a drug-free state, a comprehensive anti-drug campaign is being conducted by the Punjab Police to eradicate the scourge of drugs from the border state. The DGP has strictly ordered all the CPs/SSPs to identify all the hotspots where drug addiction is prevalent and to identify all the major drug peddlers in their jurisdictions. He also instructed the police chiefs to confiscate the property of all the arrested drug smugglers so that their illicit money can be recovered.
