Solanki, a resident of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, allegedly committed suicide on February 12 by jumping off the seventh floor of his hostel located on the Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay) campus in suburban Powai. On March 3, a ‘note’ was recovered from Solanki’s hostel room, in which another student living in the hostel was mentioned.

The Maharashtra government had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Solanki’s parents had claimed that she was discriminated against at the institute because she belonged to a Scheduled Caste (ST). The probe committee set up by IIT Bombay ruled out caste discrimination and indicated that poor academic performance may have been the reason for his suicide.

“The report of handwriting analysis done by the expert has been received, which confirms that the ‘suicide note’ recovered from Darshan Solanki’s hostel room was written by him,” the official said. “The suicide note recovered by the SIT on March 3 mentioned the name of Solanki’s hostel student and held him responsible for the death,” he said.
