There has been a 31 percent increase in the number of demat accounts on a year-on-year basis. The number of demat accounts is increasing because of the attractive returns from the stock markets. Apart from this, the number of new accounts opened in January has been more than the previous four months. However, it is still less than the average runrate of 29 lakhs for 2021-22. According to analysis by Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the number of new accounts opened stood at 2.2 million in January. It was 21 lakh in December and 20 lakh each in September, October and November. As per the data, the number of demat accounts increased to 11 crore in January. In January 2022, this figure was 8.4 crore. The number of demat accounts has increased by 31 percent on an annual basis.
The number of demat accounts also increased by 34% in December.
Let us tell you that the number of demat accounts has increased to 108 million in December 2022, which shows an increase of 34 percent on an annual basis. The attractive returns from the stock markets, ease of account opening process and increase in financial savings have led to such a rapid growth in the number of demat accounts. The sequential growth in such accounts was higher in December than in the preceding three months. Demat accounts grew in the last year due to attractive returns from equity markets and ease of account opening process by brokers for clients.
