These weddings are also called ‘The Big Fat Punjabi Wedding’. But have you ever wondered why it is called ‘Patiala Peg’? Why is the name of another city not taken along with it? Where did this word come from and how did the whole world become a fan of it? Let’s know the history of Patiala Pag and its specialtyโ€ฆ

The name ‘Patiala Peg’ comes from the royal family of Patiala. It is a gift of Maharaj Bhupinder Singh. Bhupinder Singh was the father of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and was the Maharaja of Patiala princely state from 1900 to 1938. Amarinder Singh mentions this in his book Captain Amarinder Singh: The People’s Maharaja. Captain wrote, the reason for the name ‘Patiala peg’ was the insistence of the Maharaja to defeat the British team in a cricket match.

Caused by cricket
In fact, he was fond of playing cricket. Because of this, the British team often came to play with him. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh would make a plan to defeat the British at any cost and invite them to a party on the eve of the match. They used to deliberately make huge pegs of whiskey ready to drink it. Due to this, the British would arrive to play the match hanging heavily and could not stay ahead of the Maharaja’s team for long. Maharaja got a big victory in this match.

The British came to complain
When the drug subsided, the British came to complain. A political envoy of the Viceroy was sent. Then Maharaja Bhupinder Singh silenced them by replying that we have big forts in Patiala. After this, pegs with higher whiskey content came to be called Patiala pegs. A Patial peg contains about 120 ml of whisky. Normally, when the glass is gripped, the whiskey spreads from your little finger to the finger next to your thumb. This fort with four fingers is called Patiala.
