Heavy rains, floods and landslides destroy Himachal tourism, loss to state estimated at Rs 5620.22 crore

Himachal Pradesh Tourism: The tourism industry of Himachal Pradesh has been badly affected due to heavy rains this year. The National Highway from Dharamshala to McLeodganj has been badly damaged at several places. In Dharamshala alone, the damage due to rain is estimated to be over Rs 6 crore, which may increase further as reports are yet to come from various departments.

More rain than previous years

Prem Sagar, a hotelier in Dharamshala, said, “The monsoon season is underway and will last for about 90 days. We are now in the middle of monsoon season. This year Monsoon (Monsoon SDS) started on time but Himachal is getting more rain than previous years. Due to unplanned waterlogging in many places, the people are facing a lot of trouble.

Prem Sagar said that the national highway from Dharamshala to McLeodganj has been damaged at many places in just thirty days of the monsoon season. The travel industry is already going through bad times for the last three years due to Covid. Due to poor connectivity, it may suffer further for the next two years now. Massive landslides and flash floods have badly affected the travel industry. It has decreased by more than 90 percent.

So far 187 people have lost their lives

Meanwhile, the state disaster management authority said on Saturday that the monsoon has claimed 187 lives in Himachal Pradesh on June 24. According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA), 34 people are missing and 215 people have been injured so far. 702 houses have been damaged in the state.

So far the estimated loss is Rs 5620.22 crore

Apart from this, 7161 houses have been partially damaged. Due to rain and flood, 241 shops have been damaged while 2218 gaushalas have been damaged. Meanwhile, a loss of Rs 5620.22 crore has been estimated so far. “Apart from 72 incidents of landslides, there have been 52 incidents of flash floods in the state,” the HPSDMA said. More than 650 roads, including three national highways, are closed.
