Alcohol is not considered good for health but still some people drink alcohol daily and some occasionally. In a recent study, it has been revealed that people who consume at least one drink daily, their blood pressure increases rapidly. According to a report by CNN, the problem of high blood pressure also occurs in young people, who do not already have a complaint of high blood pressure.

The research was published in the American Association Journal of Hypertension. Data from 7 international studies from 1997 to 2021 found that people who drank only one glass of alcohol a day had a significantly higher risk of developing high blood pressure than those who drank occasionally.

According to the Mayo Clinic, by the time symptoms of high blood pressure appear, it has already done a lot of damage to the body. If BP is not under control, problems with disability, poor quality of life and even heart attack or stroke can occur.

Experts were surprised to see the data

“We were surprised to find that young people who drank very little alcohol had higher blood pressure levels,” said Dr. Marco Visiti, senior author of the research. However, the blood pressure of these people was much lower than that of the heavy drinkers.

Blood pressure is measured in two numbers in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). The peak number (systolic) measures the contraction and pumping of blood through the heart muscle. Whereas, the lower number is called diastolic which measures the pressure between heartbeats.

The study found that the adverse effects of alcohol on systolic blood pressure were observed even in men and women who consumed very small amounts of alcohol each day. Study co-author Dr. Paul Wilton is quoted by the outlet as saying, “Both systolic and diastolic readings increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, but of the two, systolic blood pressure poses the greatest risk in young adults.” Heart Association, systolic readings indicate cardiovascular risk in people over 50 years of age.
