Bureau Report: An important hearing in the case of Waris Punjab chief Amritpal Singh was held in the Punjab Haryana High Court. Waris Punjab’s lawyer Iman Singh Khara filed a habeas corpus petition and claimed that Amritpal Singh has been arrested and the police are not telling it. On this, the court asked Iman Singh Khara to give evidence and also directed the government to file a reply. The government filed an affidavit the very next day and said that Amritpal Singh is not in their custody and will be arrested soon. While Waris Punjab’s lawyer sought time from the court to file a reply, he could present evidence even on Wednesday that Amritpal Singh had been detained illegally.

Lawyer Iman Singh Khara said that he sent his reply to the Central Government, on this the High Court said that he should have given his reply to the Punjab Government. After this, the High Court has now put the hearing of the Amritpal Singh case on April 24 with the petition of 8 other people locked up in NSA. After 3-3 months, the government will have to present new evidence if it wants to increase the detention of people under NSA. Retired judges and lawyers are members of the advisory board who will decide whether to grant further detention extensions. People locked up under NSA can also speak before this advisory board.
