‘Voter list will be prepared in a different way’

Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Malwinder Singh Kang while welcoming the decision of the Punjab government said that this time there has been an improvement in the voting process. Previously, the list of voters was given to the Gurdwara Election Commission by the candidate, due to which there was confusion. The candidate used to get the votes of his voters. Only a few people used to vote themselves. While this will not happen this time, Kang said that this time camps will be set up in the villages for voting, voter card will be mixed with Aadhaar card and names will be added to the fit voter list.

Daduwal welcomed

HSGPC former president Baljit Singh Daduwal has welcomed this new voting process. Giving an example of the voting process of the Haryana government for HSGPC general elections, Daduwal said that only 40 percent of the votes have been cast in the government’s fixed time, but the Punjab government’s decision to hold votes by setting up camps in villages is good. More and more Sikhs will get a chance to exercise their rights.

BJP also welcomed

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa has also welcomed the decision of SGPC to set up camps in villages for the polls. He said earlier voting camps were organized in the Gurdwara but people did not show much interest. Candidates used to get the votes of their supporters and then win. Now, by going to the houses to vote, more and more people will have the opportunity to participate in the voting process.

Akali Dal raised questions

Akali Dal Spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Keller has welcomed the voting process of SGPC but also questioned how Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann can finally announce the voting process. This announcement is made by the Gurdwara Election Commission. He is the Chief Minister of the state or the Chairman of Gurdwara Election Commission. With what right is Chief Minister Mann giving election information?

In May, the Gurudwara Election Commission gave orders to the Deputy Commissioners

In the same year in May, there was news that the Gurdwara Election Commission has intensified the activities regarding the SGPC elections. Chief Commissioner Gurdwara Election Retired Justice SS Saro has issued instructions to the Punjab Chief Secretary, Additional Secretary Home Department, and all Deputy Commissioners of the state to prepare the list of voters for the SGPC elections as soon as possible. The Gurdwara Election Commission has given instructions to prepare the list of voters under Section 48 Section 49 of the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925.

SGPC was last elected in 2011

SGPC elections were last held in 2011 on the directives of the central government. The Shiromani Akali Dal won in a landslide. But the Sahajdhari organization challenged it in the Punjab Haryana High Court for depriving it of the right to vote. Due to the voting rights of Sahajdharis under the Gurdwara Act 1925, the court ruled in favor of the Sahajdhari organization and canceled the 2011 elections. When the SGPC challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, the court stayed the decision of the High Court and directed the committee, which has been running since 2007, to work till the decision. In 2016, the Modi government on the recommendation of the Akali Dal amended the Gurdwara Act and made it the voting jurisdiction of the Sahajdhari, after a few days when the hearing was held, the SGPC informed the court about the Centre’s decision and then the court upheld the SGPC’s decision. Proclaiming the decision in favor, approved the selected committee of 2011.

Opposition questions, Akali Dal’s answer

When the Supreme Court’s decision came in 2016, the opposition parties demanded that the SGPC elections should be held as soon as possible, but the SAD’s argument was that since the 2011 committee was approved by the Supreme Court in 2016, there is a 5-year period. The tenure will begin now. But in 2021, the tenure of the 2011 committee also ended, but despite this, the SGPC elections did not take place. But now the way the Gurudwara Election Commission has instructed the DC of all the districts and the Punjab government to prepare the voter list, soon the central government can announce the election of SGPC. Considering the current political situation, the election of the Shiromani Committee this time will not be easy for the Akali Dal.
