Since the first week of June last year, flight services at Germany’s Frankfurt Airport have increased significantly.
According to a recent airport statement, these services focus on connections between European cities. At the same time, there will also be an increase in flights to popular holiday destinations, reports SchengenVisaInfo.com.
In addition, various airlines are scheduled to resume multiple weekly connections to Majorca in Spain. The authority also said other long-haul destinations are being added to the program as well.
Currently, the daily capacity of the airport is up to about 26,000, which means an increase of ten per cent more than last year.
“The airport operator expects a gradual build-up of flight services in the weeks ahead. However, as overall volumes remain well below last year’s levels due to the coronavirus pandemic, Terminal 1 will remain the focal point of all passenger handling activities for the time being,” the statement reads.
On February 17 of this year, German airport staff decided to go on a 24-hour strikewhich resulted in massive flight disruptions at the airports in Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hanover, and Bremen.
Considering that the relevant authorities of the airports had not made any effort to improve the conditions of the workers and had not managed to pay the salaries, the German union Verdi called on all of them to go on strike.
The same said that the strike would have an impact, especially on domestic travel, and for this reason, the union has warned in advance that all passengers should find alternatives.
Previously, data provided to the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) revealed that the number of passengers arriving or departing from German airports doubled last year compared to 2021.
Such data also shows that 23 German airports recorded almost 155.2 million passengers, which is an increase of 111 per cent compared to 2021 levels.
The number of passengers registered at German airports in 2019 reached an all-time high of 226.7 million passengers.
Besides, in May of last year, the German operator of Frankfurt Airport, Fraport, experienced a resurgence in business travel to Germany’s main hub. The group also operates a total of 31 airports worldwide, including Greece, Slovenia, and Greece in Europe.
According to the CEO of Fraport, Stefan Schulte, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had only a small impact on the group’s airports.
