Four people arrested for taking bribe from NRI in exchange for compensation

Anti-Corruption campaign in Punjab: Two employees posted at DRO office, Ludhiana and two others on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs. Four people including private individuals have been arrested.

The arrested persons have been identified as Patwari Ram Singh and Clerk Naresh Kumar, who are DRO. Offices are posted at Ludhiana and CEIGALL. Two employees of India Limited have been appointed as Liaising Officer Harkirat Singh Bedi and Tehandar Singh.

The spokesperson said that the complainant filed a complaint at Police Station Vigilance Bureau, Ludhiana Range that his 6 kanals of agricultural land has been acquired for the Delhi-Katra Express Highway, for which Rs 49 lakh is compensation. He filed a compensation file on May 22, 2023 with D.R.O. was submitted in Ludhiana office.

The complainant said that about a month ago NHAI marked the land and started erecting towers and when he objected and asked to issue compensation for the land first, a J.C.B. The driver gave him Mahendra’s number, who asked him to contact Harkirat Bedi further for compensation. Harkirat Bedi made him DRO. The office assured to release the compensation within 2-3 days and said that he will have to pay Rs 40,000 after which the deal was settled for Rs 30,000.

The spokesman said that after preliminary investigation, the Vigilance Bureau team laid a trap and arrested Harkirat Singh Bedi at a dhaba near Sahnewal, taking a bribe of Rs 30,000 from the complainant in the presence of government witnesses. Vigilance has also arrested Tehandar Singh who came with the accused.

On the revelation of the accused Harkirat Bedi, the Vigilance has also arrested Patwari Ram Singh and Clerk Naresh Kumar on charges of collusion in the case of taking bribe in exchange for clearing the file. Both the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 each from Harkirat Bedi to clear the file. It may be mentioned that Ram Singh Patwari retired in 2020 and D.R.O. Working in office from 2020 on contract basis. In this regard, a case has been registered under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Police Station Vigilance Bureau, Ludhiana Range.
