Former Kerala Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy passed away today on July 18. He was also seen on the Bharat Joko Yatra with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Kerala Congress President K Sudhakaran and Chandy’s relatives shared the information about his death on Tuesday. Oommen Chandy, who was said to be a senior Congress leader, was 79 years old.

K Sudhakaran tweeted, “The story of a king who conquered the world with the power of love has a sad ending.” Today, I am deeply saddened by the passing away of a great, Ooman Chandy. He touched countless lives and his legacy will always resonate in our hearts.”

The son reported the death
His son informed about the death of a senior Congress leader. He wrote on Ooman Chandy’s Facebook page that Appa is no more. Two-time Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy breathed his last in Bengaluru on Tuesday. According to information, Chandi was ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Bangalore.

Who was Ooman Chandy?

Oommen Chandy was the Chief Minister of Kerala twice from 2004-06 and 2011-16. The senior Congress leader began his tenure as an MLA by winning the 1970 assembly elections at the age of 27. Later won 11 elections in a row. Chandy has represented only his home constituency Puthupalli in the last five decades.

In 2022, he became the longest serving member of the state legislative assembly by representing Puthupalli in the House for 18,728 days. He surpassed the record of former Kerala Congress (M) supremo late KM Mani. During his political innings, Chandy served four terms as a minister in various Cabinets and four terms as Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
