Bureau Report: Former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has passed away, he breathed his last at the age of 95 in Fortis Hospital in Mohali in the evening. He was admitted to the hospital last Friday. Doctors kept him in ICU due to breathing problem. On Wednesday, his dead body will be kept at the Akali Dal office in Chandigarh for public viewing. People will be able to visit from 10 am to 2 pm. Parkash Singh Badal will be cremated in Badal village on Thursday. Parkash Singh Badal has been the Chief Minister for 5 times. Even in June 2022, he was admitted to the hospital due to chest pain, but after some time he was discharged. After this, in September 2022, his health deteriorated again and he was admitted to PGI. Parkash Singh Badal was the Chief Minister of Punjab for the last time from 2012 to 2017. From 2007 to 2017, he was the Chief Minister for 10 consecutive years. In 2022, he lost the assembly elections for the first time in decades.

Parkash Singh Badal’s political journey has spanned 7 decades, in 1947 he first contested the Sarpanch election from his native village Badal. He won 6 consecutive elections from Lambi Constituency. Parkash Singh Badal was the president of Shiromani Akali Dal from 1995 to 2008. He was elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha a record 10 times. In 1972 and 1980 and 2002, he was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly. In 1957, Parkash Singh Badal reached the Vidhan Sabha for the first time on a Congress ticket, in 1969 he won the election again and took charge of the Ministry of Panchayat Raj, Animal Husbandry and Dairy. After Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister, he was elected Member of Parliament and was also Minister of Agriculture at the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him India’s Nelson Mandela due to his long jail term.

Parkash Singh Badal became the Chief Minister for the first time from 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980 he was the CM of the state for the second time. For the third time, Parkash Singh Badal got the chance to become the Chief Minister from 1997 to 2002, during which he formed the government together with the BJP. Then from 2007 to 2012 and from 20012 to 2017, Parkash Singh Badal held the post of Chief Minister for the fourth and fifth time. During this period, he was also the Chief Minister of the Akali BJP government. Parkash Singh Badal became the youngest Chief Minister in 1970 and also the oldest Chief Minister.

Parkash Singh Badal got his primary education from the village

Parkash Singh Badal was born on 8 December 1927 in the village of Abul Khurana in Punjab, he received his primary education from a local teacher and then went to school in Lambi. Where he used to go to study on horse from Badal village. He went to Manohar Lal Memorial High School in Ferozepur for his high school education. After this, he started social work after studying from the Christian College of Lahore.

Parkash Singh Badal was awarded Fakhr-e-Qaum by Panj Singh Sahiban in 2011. During his tenure as Chief Minister, Virasat e Khalsa was built in Sri Anandpur Sahib, apart from which he was honored with the Padma Bhushan Award by the Government of India. But he returned this honor in opposition to the Agrarian Laws. Parkash Singh Badal also built many museums in Punjab during his tenure.
