Financial assistance of about Rs 85.92 crore provided to Government/Private Cowsheds for maintenance of stray cattle: Dr. private

Chandigarh: Minister for Local Government Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar said that the urban local bodies (ULBIs) have provided financial assistance of about 85.92 crore rupees for the maintenance of stray animals. This was said by the Minister for Local Government Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar today during the ongoing budget session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha while responding to the motion brought by MLA Daljit Singh Grewal (Bhola) and Gurpreet Singh Banawali.

Giving more information in this regard, Minister of Local Government Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar said that there are 1.70 lakh stray cattle in about 417 private registered cowsheds in the state. Apart from this, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department Punjab has constructed 77 cattle sheds in 20 government cattle ponds in the state, which have around 10,024 stray cattle.
Dr. Nijr added that 10 cowsheds are being run by urban local bodies at their level, in which about 3385 stray cattle are kept. He said that urban local bodies capture stray cattle roaming within their limits and release them in government/private cow sheds. About 33575 stray cattle have been caught by them during the last five years and released in cow sheds.
Dr Nijjar said that around 185 government/private cowsheds are being given financial assistance of Rs 10 to 30 per animal per day or monthly according to their financial status and the funds of the cows available with them. He also said that till now 183.44 crore rupees have been collected by the urban local bodies as gaucess.
