Chandigarh: Earthquake tremors were felt in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Delhi. According to the National Seismological Center of India, the tremors were felt at 1:33:42 pm on Tuesday.

According to preliminary reports, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 30 km, 18 km from Gandoh Bhalesa village in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Richter scale of the earthquake is said to be 5.4.

Director of National Center for Seismology Dr. OP Mishra said that an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 was recorded in Doda of Jammu and Kashmir today. Earthquake tremors can be felt in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Punjab and adjoining areas. At the same time, he said that the aftershock may be of lesser magnitude than the main shock.

Strong earthquake shocks were felt in Jammu and Kashmir. Tremors were also felt in other parts of North India including the national capital Delhi and its adjoining areas.

A local shopkeeper in Srinagar told news agency ANI that due to the earthquake school children were scared and people sitting in shops came out. Locals said: “The earthquake scared the school children. People came out of the shops. It was terrifying. It was more intense than the shocks of the previous week.
