Congress leader and MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira (Sukhpal Singh Khaira) has been arrested. The Punjab Police arrested him today at 6.30 am. Sources said that the Congress MLA was taken to Jalalabad. He has been arrested in the 2015 drug case. Cases are allegedly registered against them under the NDPS Act. He has been questioned many times in this matter. ED has been investigating this case for almost 8 years. In the case in which Khaira has been arrested by the Punjab Police, the Supreme Court has rejected that case.
Action has already been taken against Sukhpal Singh Khaira. The ED had earlier summoned him for questioning in this case, from where he was arrested. The ED had alleged that Khaira is an accused in the drug case and an accomplice of the fake passport racket. While filing a petition in Punjab Haryana, Khaira told the High Court that the case registered against him under the NDPS Act in 2015 is under consideration. While this case was pending, a case of money laundering was also registered against the petitioner.
The High Court granted bail to Sukhpal Singh Khaira
In January 2022, the High Court granted conditional bail to the petitioner i.e. Congress MLA in this case. After this they NDPS (NDPS) had sought refuge in the Supreme Court over the matter. In February this year, the Supreme Court gave relief to him and ordered the cancellation of the case registered under the NDPS Act. Now Khaira says that when the Supreme Court has rejected the NDPS case against him, then the money laundering case filed against him by the ED should also be rejected.
Joined Congress from Aam Aadmi Party
While this case was pending, a case of money laundering was also registered against the petitioner. The High Court had granted conditional bail to the petitioner in the case in January 2022. After this, he took refuge in the Supreme Court regarding the NDPS case. In February this year, the Supreme Court gave relief to them and ordered the cancellation of the case registered under the NDPS Act. Let us tell that Khaira won the assembly elections from Bhulath seat of Kapurthala district of Punjab on the ticket of Aam Aadmi Party in 2017 but in January 2019 he resigned from the primary membership of Aam Aadmi Party and then Joined Congress in June 2021.
Claim of Congress MLA – Supreme Court rejected the case
Congress MLA Khaira says that the Supreme Court has rejected the NDPS case. Also, the Congress MLA has demanded the ED to cancel the case filed against him. The High Court has also issued a notice asking the ED to stop the proceedings. On 9 March 2015, 9 smugglers were arrested in Fazilka along with 2 kg of heroin, 24 gold biscuits, a country pistol and two Pakistani SIM cards. Khaira’s name came up in this case and since then he is being interrogated.
