Punjab’s first Working Women Hostel: Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development Department of Punjab Dr. Baljit Kaur laid the foundation stone of the first hostel of its kind at Gandhi Vanita Ashram in Jalandhar with the aim of providing safe and convenient accommodation to working women.

An amount of 2.17 crore rupees will be spent on this hostel, in which accommodation facilities for 100 women will also be arranged, as well as a crèche for the care of small children. On the occasion of laying the foundation stone in the Ashram, Dr. Baljit Kaur said that many schemes are being implemented by the department for the empowerment of women, of which the Working Women’s Hostel scheme is one.

Under this plan, the Punjab government is planning to establish working women’s hostels in different cities, which has been started today from Jalandhar. In these hostels where 100 working women will stay, crèches will also be opened in these hostels so that women can go to their jobs without worrying about leaving their small children in the crèches.

Terming this scheme as a big step towards the empowerment of women, the Cabinet Minister said that this scheme will help in providing a sense of self-respect to the needy women as well as in providing a safe environment.

Hostel facility can be taken by working women, who are single, widowed, divorced, married etc. provided their husband or immediate family does not reside in the same city/region. Apart from this, special priority will be given to women and the disabled from the backward sections of the society.

Dr. Baljit Kaur said that because of this, many women cannot work outside the home in other cities because they do not get safe and convenient accommodation, which hinders the economic empowerment of women.

He said that if the working women get the facility of such hostels, they will not hesitate to work or get a job in big cities outside the home, which will lead to the development of women as well as the development of Punjab.

On this occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner (c) Major Amit Mahajan, Deputy Director of the Department Rupinder Kaur, SDM. Balbir Raj Singh, Senior Officer Amarjit Singh Bhullar, District Program Officer Manjinder Singh and others were present.
