Bureau report : The film ‘Punjab 95’, made on the great champion of human rights, Jaswant Singh Khalra, has received another setback. The film has been kicked out of the TIFF Film Festival held at Gala. The film ‘Punjab 95’ was to be screened at the TIFF Film Festival starting from September 11. A spokesperson for the festival has confirmed this but did not say why the screening has been stopped. Earlier, the Censor Board had set a condition to change the name and release the film with an A certificate after 21 cuts. Which has been challenged by the producer of the film in Baba High Court. The Sikh community is very upset over the continuous ban on the film made on Jaswant Singh Khalra and they also raised a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sikh organizations say that on one hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that the Congress attacked the Akal Takht and oppressed the Sikhs, and on the other hand, they do not want to show the oppression done by the Congress. Including the inhumane murder of Jaswant Singh Khalra. Earlier, Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal had also opposed the Censor Board’s 21 cuts on the film ‘PUNJAB 95’ and described it as discriminatory behavior against Sikhs.

Sukhbir Badal had said that this film is based on a court document. The Sacher Board is trying to cover up the atrocities of the then government by making unnecessary cuts to how a human rights activist exposed the killings taking place in police custody. The Akali Dal president had alleged that this proves that the Censor Board has a different mindset regarding films made on Sikhs. Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the same Censor Board had approved the Kashmir file which told about the oppression of Kashmiri Pandits. That is, it is clear that the board is not fair. Sukhbir Singh Badal asked the Censor Board to withdraw all the cuts and release the film in its original form so that the story of oppression against the Sikh community would not be suppressed.

In the film, Diljit Dosanjh is playing the lead role of Jaswant Singh Khalra along with Arjun Rampal. Earlier the name of the film was Ghallughara but after objection from the Censor Board the name was changed. The film Punjab 95 has been produced by Ronnie Screwvala. While its director is Honey Trehan who made Raat Akeeli Hai on NETFLIX in 2020.

The film is made on Jaswant Singh Khalra

The film ‘Punjab 95’ has been directed by Honey Trehan. It is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a great champion of human rights. Khalra was the strongest voice against human rights violations in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s. He was a bank manager in Amritsar. He raised questions about the encounter of thousands of innocent Sikhs during the period of militancy and 1984. His organization had disclosed the unlawful death of about 25 thousand people in Punjab. Even the police had killed 2000 people who did not cooperate in their work.

According to the guidelines

Khalra went missing in September 1995, last seen cleaning a car in front of his house. Later, 6 police officers were found guilty in the case of their abduction and murder. According to CBFC, the film is sensitive and the scenes and dialogues of the film have been cut as per the guidelines. He said that the deleted dialogues and scenes in the film can incite violence and Sikh youth. So they have been removed.
