10 percent is currently being used
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had recently issued guidelines to road construction agencies of the states and the central government. A senior ministry official said that in January 2017, it had decided to use solid waste-plastic waste in road construction. In this, 10 percent plastic waste is used in the construction of National Highway. He said that till now plastic waste has been used in the construction of several thousand kilometers of highways. Plastic waste roads are being constructed in cities like Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Jamshedpur, Indore, Lucknow etc. In the new guideline, the government has made it mandatory to use plastic waste in the construction and repair of service roads of National Highways within a radius of 50 kilometers in urban-rural areas with five lakh population. For this, plastic waste collection centers will be set up at various places, so that the plastic waste can be transported to the hot mix plant.
Try to use more and more plastic in the road
The new standards for plastic codes of the Indian Road Congress (RRC) were formulated in November 2013. It is the first plastic code in the world to use plastic waste in road construction. In this, 10 percent plastic waste is mixed with coal tar in the hot mix plant. It consumes 15 per cent less coal tar and makes the highway durable for 10 years (twice) instead of five. Due to plastic being water-resistant, there are no potholes on the road due to rain water entering and the roads do not get spoiled in the changing season of summer and winter. According to the government order, if plastic is used in the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, then the length of that expressway is about 1386 km. According to him, even if 10 per cent plastic is used in it, it will be more than 130 km. By the way, the government’s effort is to use it as much as possible.
