New Delhi. Even though the consumption of cow urine is said to be beneficial in some diseases by citing Ayurveda, but a recent research shows that consuming cow urine is not good for humans. According to research, it contains some harmful bacteria which can also cause harm. Research conducted by Bareilly-based ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), the country’s premier animal research body, found that buffalo urine was more effective on some bacteria.
Significantly, cow urine is widely sold in the Indian market by many suppliers without the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) trademark. Research was done with three PhD students under the leadership of Bhoj Raj Singh of the institute regarding the use of cow urine in humans. The research claims that urine samples from healthy cows and bulls contain at least 14 types of harmful bacteria, including the presence of Escherichia coli, which can cause stomach infections.
Research done on 73 urine samples of cow, buffalo and humans
The results of the research have been published in the online research website ResearchGate. Singh, who heads the department of epidemiology at the institute, said statistical analysis of 73 urine samples from cow, buffalo and humans showed that the antibacterial activity in buffalo urine was much better than that of cows. Buffalo urine was significantly more effective on bacteria such as S. epidermidis and E. rapontici.
Pathogenic bacteria found in urine
โWe collected urine samples from three types of cows โ Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Vindavani (cross breed) โ from local dairy farms, as well as samples from buffaloes and humans. Our study, conducted between June and November 2022, concluded that a substantial proportion of urine samples from apparently healthy individuals carried potentially pathogenic bacteria. The urine of some individuals, regardless of gender and breeder species, may be inhibitory to a select group of bacteria.
He further added, โUrine cannot be recommended for human consumption in any case. Some argue that distilled urine does not contain infectious bacteria. We are doing more research on this.
