Wrote a letter to the Election Commission
A letter has been written to the Election Commission by the Local Bodies Department. Governor Punjab Banwari Lal Purohit had asked the Punjab government to conduct these elections before November 15, after which the local body has also asked the Election Commission to conduct these elections before November 15. According to the letter issued by the local body, the government will have to hold elections in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Phagwara before November 15. In which now only one month is left.
In fact, these elections are pending from January 2023 from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala, while elections have not yet been held since Phagwara became a municipal corporation. These elections were constantly hanging due to the work of ward division not being completed.
The Governor of Punjab has also approved the holding of elections of 39 municipal councils in addition to the Municipal Corporation elections. Currently, no notification or letter has been written regarding them.
Election according to old wards or new ones
There is a lot of confusion about whether these municipal elections will be held according to the old ward divisions or the new ones. In fact, the work of warding has not been completed yet. The new wards are being finalised. If the local body finalizes it in a few days, then these elections will be conducted according to the new wards otherwise they will have to be implemented along with the old wards.
