After listening to the problems of the shrimp farmers of the state at his office here, Laljit Singh Bhullar said that the state government will focus on reducing the cost of this occupation under the target of increasing the area under shrimp farming to 5000 hectares in the next five years.
The cabinet minister said that a four-member committee based on director fisheries, PSPCL officials and two shrimp farmers will submit its report after considering all aspects to consider the concession in electricity rates. He said that apart from this, the possibilities of switching from conventional energy sources to solar energy for shrimp farming will also be explored.
Laljit Singh Bhullar said that the south-western districts of the state Sri Muktsar Sahib, Fazilka, Mansa, Bathinda and Faridkot are affected by the problem of salinity and beans. He said that although traditional crops have been affected in these districts, shrimp farming has been very successful. Therefore, the government will leave no stone unturned to promote shrimp farming in this area and create self-employment opportunities for the youth of the state.
Meanwhile, the principal secretary of the department Vikas Pratap said that after the report of the committee, this matter will be discussed with the finance department so that a suitable solution can be reached. Tejveer Singh, Principal Secretary, Power Department, said that the demands of the shrimp farmers will be sympathetically considered.
Director Fisheries Jasveer Singh, Assistant Director Satinder Kaur and other officers were also present on this occasion.
