Some changes have been made in the mid-day meal given to students in schools in Punjab. Fibre-rich seasonal fruits like kinnu and guava will be included in the mid-day meal to be given to government school students in Punjab.

Now seasonal fruits will be given in mid-day meal once a week. These fruits include banana, guava, litchi, potato, apple and mango. It will start from February 12. Orders have been issued by the Education Department in this regard.

The order is effective immediately and from next Monday, children will get seasonal fruits instead of the bananas they are being given now.

Initially, the department had planned to implement the change from the next quarter. Bananas were included in every Monday lunch from January 1 and Rs 5 per student was kept for it.

Punjab School Mid Day Meal Society General Manager Virinder Singh Brar said that the fruits being grown in Punjab include kinnu, guava, mango, lychee, plum. “School heads can themselves purchase the local fruits of the area from the funds already provided to them.
