British Columbia plans to impose minimum language requirements at private training institutions and set higher standards for labor market needs and degree quality, news agency Reuters reported.
According to officials, the decision is aimed at protecting international students from being exploited by unscrupulous institutions and improving the overall quality of post-secondary education in the state. The move is also attributed to the Justin Trudeau government's plan to curb a surge in international student immigration, which has been blamed in part for the country's housing crisis.
The move comes a week after the Canadian government announced an immediate two-year limit on new international student permits, aiming to reduce student enrollment by 35 percent to about 3,60,000 this year. It will also stop issuing work permits to some students after graduation.
