Can the execution of 8 Indians end in Qatar? What will happen next after the appeal in the court?

A court in Qatar has accepted an appeal against the death sentence of 8 former Indian Navy officers. Hearing on their appeal is expected to start soon in the court. Last month on October 26, the Qatari court announced the death sentence to the former officials. Since then India was in constant contact with Qatar.

After various diplomatic channels, the former officials’ appeal was accepted. The Government of India is continuously monitoring the legal process in this matter and is in touch with the Qatari authorities. Let’s know what will happen next after the appeal is accepted in Qatar court?

Three stages of the court process in Qatar

The trial court’s decision is currently being challenged in the Court of Appeal. If these ex-officers of the Indian Navy do not get relief here too, an appeal can be made in the Supreme Court of Qatar. The Emir of Qatar has the power to pardon any prisoner after a court process.

What is the case of Indians or ex-officers?

In August last year, these eight retired Indian Navy officers were arrested by Qatar’s security agencies on false charges of espionage. All of them were locked up in different cells and tortured for months. After several months, Indian officials and their families there were allowed to visit all those Indians. Those eight former officers also learned after a long time that their colleagues have also been arrested and kept in custody.

The hearing in the lower court was also very suspicious. The facts relating to this case were also not given to the trial court before the death sentence was pronounced. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs described the decision of the Qatar court as surprising.

Following are the names of former officers of the Indian Navy:

Commander Poorendu Tiwari,
Commander Sanjeev Gupta,
Captain Navtej Singh Gill,
Captain Saurabh Vashisht,
Captain Birendra Kumar Verma,
Commander Sugunakar Pakala,
Commander Amit Nagpal,
Sailor Rajesh
