The BSc Agriculture (Hons) course will now be discontinued due to lack of faculty and arable land in 5 government colleges of Punjab. Because in the next 15 days those students will also pass out, who had taken admission in the colleges for the course 4 years ago.

The districts of Punjab where the BSc Agriculture (Hons) course will be discontinued include Hoshiarpur, Tanda, Faridkot, Patiala and Muktsar Sahib. The government colleges here could not follow the norms of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). This is the reason why students will not be able to take admission for the course in these colleges. This information has been in the attention of the government for a long time. But the state government has also not been able to avert a deep crisis due to non-compliance of ICAR norms.

Not admitted for last 3 years
Due to non-fulfillment of ICAR criteria in government colleges, students have not been able to take admission for BSc Agriculture (Hons) course for the last 3 years. Now in the next 15 days those students will also pass out, who took admission 4 years ago. After this, other students will not be able to take admission for this course in colleges.

The course was started in the year 2013
BSc Agriculture Course was started in the year 2013 at Mahindra College, Patiala. It was later converted to BSC (Hons) Agriculture with 150 seats. The problems began to surface after the Punjab State Council for Agricultural Education notified the ICAR guidelines for accreditation of colleges offering agricultural courses in January 2019.

The fear of getting a job in the faculty remains
There is fear among faculty members of losing their jobs due to closure of courses. Hemant Vats, president of the Higher Education Institute Society Employees Association, has said that due to non-recognition, students will not be able to take admission in the said government colleges. He said that rules are not followed even by private institutions. But these courses are being conducted with four times the seats and double the fees.

Appeal for university recognition from UGC
Higher Education Principal Secretary Jaspreet Talwar said that an appeal is being made to the UGC to allow the colleges to operate with recognition from several universities including Punjab. At present Punjab Agricultural University is affiliated to only one university. But permission has not been received yet.
