What is congenital heart disease?
Congenital heart disease means that there is a defect in the structure of the baby’s heart from birth. Some of these conditions are such that they can be treated without surgery, but some conditions are so severe that surgery becomes necessary. According to Dr. Chandra, 9 out of every 1,000 children in India suffer from congenital heart disease. Among them, every fifth child has to undergo surgery in the first year itself.

What is a ventricular septal defect?
As the fetus develops in the womb, the wall between the left and right ventricles weakens and a hole forms in it. After this dirty and de-oxygenated blood collects in the right ventricle and clean and oxygenated blood collects in the left. Both types of blood mix in the heart. Due to its effect, the blood pressure in the lungs increases and some dirty blood enters the circulation. Due to this, the heart has to work harder to pump blood.

Why such a dangerous condition related to the heart occurs in children from birth
Sometimes the cause is genetic. In many cases genetics as well as environment are responsible for this. The environment also includes the diet of the child’s mother, which affects the child’s early development. Sometimes the medicines that women take during pregnancy also have an effect.

However, Dr. According to Chandra, the main reason for this is low genetic spread or inbreeding, a problem most common in the lower socio-economic classes where inter-caste marriages do not occur on a large scale. This is the reason why the number of such children is high in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

What are the symptoms of this dangerous heart condition?
After birth, sometimes symptoms appear early and sometimes late in babies. In the case of Bipasha Basu, the condition of the child was known only on the third day. Dr. Chandra says that children who have this type of problem may have trouble breathing. Also, while drinking milk, the baby seems very weak and tired. The weight of the child also does not matter. After seeing the symptoms, doctors do an ultrasound of the heart and see the whole situation. If the child’s heart condition does not improve, the parents are advised to undergo immediate surgery.
