Bihar’s Seemanchal is becoming a political battle ground made up of the BJP and the Grand Alliance. Both the BJP and the Grand Alliance are trying to increase their efforts in this area. This is the reason why Union Home Minister Amit Shah has decided to hold his Bihar’s first election rally in Seemanchal in September 2022. And now the Grand Alliance is going to hold its rally in Kishanganj on February 25. Political pundits say that Nitish and Tejashwi can conch shell the Lok Sabha elections from this meeting itself.

Why try hard in Seemanchal itself?

To understand the activism of BJP and Grand Alliance in Seemanchal, it is necessary to know the result of 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Four Lok Sabha seats in Seemanchal are Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj and Katihar. Out of these four, three were occupied by the NDA and one seat was won by the Congress candidate. But, after Nitish Kumar parted ways with the BJP, the equation completely changed here. Out of the four seats in Seemanchal, three are held by the Grand Alliance and one by the BJP. Actually, then JDU-BJP contested elections together. Two candidates of JDU were victorious in the elections.

But, now after JDU’s separation from BJP, BJP has become weak here. BJP wants to capture all the three seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. BJP argues that the two seats on which JDU had won were due to BJP. The people of Seemanchal had given their vote to JDU because of BJP. That’s why this seat belongs to BJP. Here, after JDU’s entry into the Grand Alliance, the challenge before the Grand Alliance is to save all its three seats. This is the reason why the grand alliance is going to hold its rally here on February 25 and in 2022 Amit Shah had also decided to hold his first meeting from here.

BJP’s concern

BJP’s pyre in Seemanchal is changing demography. According to Union Minister Giriraj Singh, after 1970, the population of Muslims in this area has increased almost 20 times and the number of Hindus has decreased. Along with this, separatist elements have also become active in this area. One reason for this is the border of Bangladesh. During 1951 to 2011, the rate of growth of Muslim population in the whole country has been 4 percent, in Seemanchal region of Bihar this growth rate has been estimated at 16 percent. Kishanganj of Bihar is one such district where Muslim population is more than Hindus.

Opportunity for Grand Alliance

The increasing population of Muslims in Seemanchal region is a matter of concern for the BJP, where it is an opportunity for the Grand Alliance. RJD is engaged in mobilizing minority voters in this area on the strength of its ‘My’ card. It is being said that Tejashwi will attack the BJP from the February 25 rally in Seemanchal. Complete preparation for this is also going on.
