Subodh Kumar Nandan, Patna: To meet their target, the postmasters of the post office have opened most of the recurring deposit accounts of Rs.100 only. Not only this, eight to ten accounts have been opened from the same funnel. This matter has come to light after the special drive that went on in the past. Under the pressure of the postal department, post masters of a large number of post offices are forced to open accounts in the name of their relatives by spending money from their pocket. This is the situation when the Postal Department had almost halved the target. There are a total of 9303 Post Offices in Bihar circle. Of these, there are 33 Head Post Offices, 1042 Sub Post Offices and 8228 Branch Post Offices.

1,84,397 Recurring Deposit (RD) accounts were opened in a month

Between January 1 and February 2, a total of 1,84,397 recurring deposit (RD) accounts were opened in Bihar circle. In these, 79913 RD accounts were opened in Central Circle, 42398 in East Circle and 62086 in North Circle. At the same time, 22751 accounts were opened under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. Of these, 2921 accounts were opened in Central Circle, 9699 in East Circle and 10131 accounts. At the same time, total 83914 TD accounts were opened in the entire circle. Of these, 45221 TD accounts were opened in Central Circle, 18190 in East Circle and 20503 in North Circle.

40% accounts opened in Rs 100

According to the information received from the sources, the Ministry of Finance gives Rs 220 to the Department of Posts as service charge for one year on opening every RD account including other savings account. Whereas, during the special drive, up to 40 per cent accounts have been opened with just Rs 100. Such accounts are never operated after opening. Due to this, the Finance Ministry is facing huge loss of revenue.

compulsion of post master to open account of small amount

Senior officials of the department say that it is the post master’s compulsion to open accounts of small amount, because the department is under pressure to increase revenue every year. According to officials, eight to 10 accounts are being opened with one cap to meet the target, which is not practical. But in order to meet the target, most of such accounts get automatically closed later. In this regard, when Chief Post Master General KK Sharma and Postal Director (Headquarters) Pankaj Kumar Mishra of the Department of Posts (Bihar Circle) were contacted, they did not respond.
