Bureau Report: The government has taken major action in the Muktsar torture case. 2 more policemen including SP (D) have been arrested. The lawyer was sitting on the flood plain for 2 days in the Punjab Haryana High Court against the torture done to the lawyer during custody. Chandigarh Bar Council held a meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann some time ago.
The head of the Chandigarh Bar Council said that a SIT has been constituted in the Muktsar lawyer torture case, the head of which will be the commissioner of Ludhiana while Jaskaran Singh will investigate the entire case. Apart from this, Muktsar SP (D) Ramandeep Singh Bhullar, CIA in-charge Raman Kamboj and Constable Harbans Singh have been arrested. SSP DIG of Muktsar Sahib has been transferred.
This is the whole matter
Varinder Singh, a member of the Bar Association, was tortured by the policemen in Sri Muktsar Sahib against which the lawyers gave an ultimatum till September 29. Advocate Varinder Singh Sandhu had advised the client to lodge a complaint with the SSP. At the request of the client, the lawyer also went to the SSP office. But could not meet with SSP. Then the client said that he is not being allowed to enter the village. After this, Advocate Virender reached Thana Sadar along with the client to file a complaint. After the complaint, the SHO came to their village and assured to form a joint committee. There are allegations that advocate Sandhu was beaten up by the policemen as soon as they left the police station. Then they were forcibly taken to the CIA office and subjected to inhuman treatment. On September 16, Advocate Sandhu appeared in court. There are allegations that earlier the police had threatened the advocate saying that if he opened his mouth in the court, he would be subjected to inhumane treatment again.
After this incident came to light, there was anger among the lawyers of the entire Punjab including Muktsar. Chandigarh Bar Association has closed its operations from September 26. They put 7 demands before the Chief Minister.
