India has completed preparations to launch its own operating system BharOS and the operating system is currently undergoing testing phase. Of course, once launched, the OS will seek to directly replace Android or iOS, which currently power most smartphone devices. BharOS will be a completely indigenous operating system. There will be many differences in this compared to Android and iOS.

What is BharOS?

BharOS It is a mobile operating system introduced by the Government of India, which has been developed to ensure the privacy and security of the countrymen. The preparation of this mobile OS was done by the government long ago. The special thing is that both Android and iOS users will be able to use it. There are no default apps bundled with iOS. That is, users will get the convenience that with this OS they will be able to use only those apps which they want to use. No app will come preloaded in the OS.

In BharOS, users will have complete freedom as to what permissions they want to give to which app. Also, the system will not force the user to use any app. It has been introduced with Native Over The Air (NOTA). NOTA updates are automatically downloaded and updated on the device. With this, the device is always updated with the latest version of the OS. Due to this, security patches are continuously available in the mobile phone or device and the bugs are always fixed.

How is BharOS different from Android and iOS?

BharOS is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This makes it somewhat similar to Google’s Android operating system. iOS is the proprietary OS of Apple and BharOS has no resemblance to it. The major difference between Android and BharOS is that the native operating system does not come with any Google services or apps. There are no pre-installed apps in BharOS, but users can download any app of their choice. The operating system may also allow users to download APK files. But, APK files can be potentially dangerous.

Who has developed BharOS?

BharOS is developed by JandK Operations Pvt Ltd (JandKops), a Section 8 (not for profit) company set up by IIT Madras, IIT Madras Innovative Technologies Foundation. The Foundation is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India under its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS).
