Bureau Report: The date of funeral of Avtar Singh Khanda has been changed once again. UK’s Sikh community asked Khanda’s mother Charanjit Kaur to fix the cremation date. Earlier it was decided that the cremation is to be done on August 5, but now the date has been changed.

Khanda is to be cremated at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Smethwick, UK. Mother Charanjit Kaur has appealed everyone to reach there on August 12. Not only these, help has also been sought from the Sikh community for the cremation.

Avtar Singh Khanda passed away on June 15 in a hospital in London. He was suffering from blood cancer. Khanda’s sister Jaspreet Kaur filed a petition in the Punjab Haryana High Court and demanded that Khanda’s dead body be brought to Punjab. The hearing of which is going on in the court. The court had asked whether Khanda is a citizen of India or of Britain, for which the Indian High Commission had sought the answer from the UK government.

Along with this, mother Charanjit Kaur and sister Jaspreet Singh had applied for a visa to go to the UK, which has been rejected by the British government. That is why the date of Khanda’s cremation was fixed on August 5. The family has now decided to cremate him on August 12 due to the High Court and the British government not granting the visa. However, the family is trying to return to the UK. But none of the family members have confirmed this. After the cancellation of the visa, Sri Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh have described it as a violation of human rights. He said that the family should be given the right to participate in the funeral. SGPC has also condemned this decision of the UK government and demanded visa.

The High Court sought proof of Khanda’s Indian status

The High Court had issued a notice to the central government during the hearing of the petition filed by sister Jaspreet Kaur. In response to which, the central government has clearly said that there is no evidence about Khanda that can prove that he is an Indian citizen. While all of Khanda’s studies have taken place in India. After this, the court asked the family to prove Khanda’s citizenship.
