Asaram Bapu Case | Gujarat: Asaram Bapu convicted in decade-old sexual assault case, court to pronounce sentence tomorrow

GandhinagarA Gujarat court on Monday convicted self-styled godman Asaram Bapu in a decade-old sexual assault case. Asaram Bapu was accused by a Surat woman of repeatedly raping him at his ashram in Motera, Ahmedabad, about 10 years ago. However, the court will pronounce the sentence on this matter tomorrow i.e. on Tuesday.

Asaram Bapu has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 354A (sexual assault), 370(4) (trafficking), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 120(b) (criminal conspiracy) Allegations were made. Asaram’s son Narayan Sai was also an accused in the case. Asaram’s wife Lakshmi, daughter Bharati and four female followers – Dhruvben, Nirmala, Jassi and Meera – were also named as accused in the case. However, all of them were earlier acquitted by the Gandhinagar court.

Asaram Bapu is in jail

It may be known that Asaram Bapu is currently lodged in a jail in Jodhpur. A trial court in Jodhpur convicted him in a separate sexual assault case in 2018 and sentenced him to jail. He was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl in his Jodhpur ashram in 2013.

Asaram Bapu was convicted under section 376 of the IPC, sexual offenses under the Protection of Children (POCSO) Act and the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act. Asaram was arrested from Indore in August 2013 and brought to Jodhpur in September 2013.
