Artisans are “missing” in Greece: Eight out of ten artisans cannot find staff

Difficulty in finding qualified staff eight out of ten artisans of Thessaloniki face the desired skillswhile artisans are in demand, according to the findings of the Economic Barometer for the May-June period, prepared by the interview polling company on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce.

“At a time when many graduates they struggle to find work corresponding to the subject of their studies and in several cases they spend years in unemployment, until a position is found that corresponds to their qualifications, craftsmen are in demand, resulting in seven out of ten artisans to say that they face difficulties in finding staff in technical branches”, is highlighted in a BETH announcement on the research, which was prepared based on a sample of 345 member companies.

According to the research, the specialties in which the greater shortage of workers are those of various artisans, resulting in the 65% of the respondents to answer that he does not find technician staff. The 6% answers that he does not find employees in the IT industry, the 3% in economic branches, while the 26% in other industries. Mixed enterprises (the 87% of them answers “yes” or “probably yes” to the question of whether they have difficulty finding staff with the skills they need), followed by service businesses with 85%. Accordingly, the 75% of manufacturing companies states that he is facing difficulties in finding the personnel his company needs.

As for the rest, to the question of whether the repeat elections affect the course of their business, over six out of ten (rate 61%) answered โ€œyes/probably yesโ€ and almost four out of ten (39%) “no/probably not”. Stability seems to be the goal, but also the message that the craft world sends out.

The insurance contributions remain the biggest “thorn” for the artisans of Thessaloniki, according to the survey: in the question “which measures do you think will strengthen your activity?” 45% of the participants answer the reduction of insurance contributions, the 23% the labor subsidy, the 17% the most essential interconnection of production with education through training programs, while the 15% “another”.

Meanwhile, answering a related question, more than half of the respondents (51%) consider the state of their business satisfactory, the 27% characterizes it as good, while the 22% as bad. For the next six months the 55% estimates that the situation of his business will be the same, the 26% better and the 19% worse.

The 35% of the respondents answer that the turnover of their business registered a decrease, the 53% how he remained the same, while the 12% how it grew

With reference to the economic situation index, this is positive for the third consecutive two months since the beginning of the Barometer, a year ago. The economic situation index in the two months of May – June was at 5,9% while in the two months of March – April it had formed at 2,9%.
