Statistics Austria have revealed that on January 1 of this year, 9,106,126 people were recorded living in Austria, which is 127,197 or +1.4 per cent more than at the beginning of last year.
Such data also show that compared to 2021, Austria in 2022 recorded a significantly stronger increase in population, i.e. +46,265 more people or +0.5 per cent. At the same time, the country also saw a slightly larger increase than in 2015 with +115,545 people or +1.3 per cent, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“Austria grew more strongly in 2022 than in previous years. Having already exceeded the nine-million mark in the first quarter of 2022 due to refugee migration from Ukraine, the population was more than 9.1 million at the beginning of 2023,” Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas reveals.
Further data shows that the largest percentage of population growth was recorded in the Austrian capital Vienna with +2.6 per cent. Meanwhile, in Burgenland the increase was half as big with +1.3 per cent and somewhat lower in Upper Austria, Vorarlberg and Lower Austria with +1.2 per cent each.
By one per cent, the population growth was marked in Salzburg, Styria and Tyrol, while Carinthia showed a smaller growth with +0.8 per cent.
As for the regional level, only four political districts such as Rust, Gmünd, Lilienfeld and Wolfsberg suffered a population decrease of up to one per cent.
The capital of Burgenland, Eisenstadt, was also among the ones that marked most growth, with +3.2 per cent. Also in cities like Sankt Pölten, Tulln and Graz there was an increase of +2.3 per cent and two per cent respectively.
Based on the report, all municipal districts within Vienna experienced population growth and they are as follows:
- Inner city (+5.9 per cent)
- Donaustadt (+4.4 per cent)
- Penzing (+ 4.1 per cent)
Austrian statistics also reveal that on January 1, 2023, a total of 1,730,286 people with foreign citizenship lived in Austria.
As a result, in the same period of 2022, the percentage of foreign citizens in the total population increased from 17.7 per cent to 19.0 per cent this year.
Last year, the number of foreign citizens increased by 143,577 people or +9.0 per cent, on the other hand, the number of Austrian citizens decreased by -16,380 people or -0.2 per cent.
Germans make up the largest group of foreign nationals living in Austria with 225,106 people. Meanwhile, the second largest nationality is Romania with 147,403 citizens, before 122,016 Serbian citizens who occupy the third place.
In 2022, a large increase was also registered by Ukrainian citizens with +66,899 people. In addition, at the beginning of this year, with 79,572 residents, Ukrainians were the ninth largest foreign nationality in Austria.
