Another story of the pain of India-Pakistan partition is seen in Sri Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara. 68-year-old Sakina from Sheikhpura, Pakistan has met her 80-year-old brother Gurmail Singh for the first time after her birth at Sri Kartarpur Sahib. Since his birth, he had only seen his brother in pictures. Seeing each other for the first time, they kept wiping each other’s tears.

This is the story of Sakina born in Pakistan. During the partition of 1947, Sakina’s family lived in Jassowal, Ludhiana. Sakina’s family moved to Pakistan during partition. Father’s name was Wali Muhammad and grandfather’s name was Jamu. Sakina says – the family came to Pakistan, but the mother remained in India. At the time of independence, there was an agreement between the two countries that the missing persons would be returned to each other. After which the father sought help from the government of Pakistan.

Pakistani army soldiers reached the village of Jassowal to take her mother. When the army arrived to pick up the mother, the 5-year-old brother was not at home. Mother called brother, but he was not even around. The Pakistan Army said they could not wait any longer and the brother remained in India. I was born in Pakistan after independence.

Brother used to send letter to mother
Sakina said that at first her brother started sending letters to the family. Her mother passed away when she was two and a half years old. Gradually the letters from the brother also stopped coming. The father said that he also has a brother. Showed him his picture. He had this mark of a brother. Father used to say that brother lives in Ludhiana.

There is no relationship other than a brother, he was looking for it all his life
Sakina said she tried to find her brother growing up, but failed. This was the only relationship left after the death of the parents. He had neither an aunt nor an uncle. His only purpose was to find his brother.

Due to the efforts of the son-in-law, the siblings met
When the daughter’s husband came to know about Sakina’s story, he started trying. A Pakistani YouTube channel started contact tracing in Punjab, India with the help of some letters kept by Sakina. At the end of last year, Sakina spoke to her brother on a video call for the first time.

Saw the brother in front for the first time
After this Sakina and her brother Gurmail’s family planned to meet at Sri Kartarpur Sahib. Gurmail met his sister for the first time at Sri Kartarpur Sahib. Both hugged and cried a lot. Both were wiping each other’s eyes. They now hope that the governments of both countries will grant them visas, so that the two siblings can spend some days of their lives together.

Gurmail Singh is 80 years old
Sakina’s brother Gurmail Singh Grewal lives in Jassowal village of Ludhiana. He has a daughter and a wife. Now he is 80 years old. Last year, when she found out that she also has a sister, her joy knew no bounds. They felt that thankfully, they had someone in this world.
