Bureau report : Semi-final round of politics is going to take place in Punjab before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Punjab government has decided to dissolve the panchayats and elections may be announced soon. Apart from this, Gram Panchayat and Panchayat Committees have been dissolved. The notification has also been issued by the government. According to the notification, the elections of Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishads can be held before 25 November 2023 while the elections of Gram Panchayats will be held before 31 December 2023. The government has issued a notification and said that administrative officers will be appointed to monitor the development works of the villages before the elections. This decision has been taken by the Punjab Government under the Punjab Panchayat Raj Act 1994.

13241 Gram Panchayats, 153 Block Committees, 23 District Parishads in Punjab. The Rural Development and Panchayat Department is responsible for conducting these elections. Panchayat elections held at the village level are the lowest and strongest foundation of democracy through which the responsibility of providing facilities to the last person is there. Right before the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, the Mann government has played a big gamble by announcing to hold these elections.

However, it is believed that the ruling party benefits from the local elections. But the kind of political situation in Punjab, there is no doubt that the competition will be tough. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party will contest the panchayat elections with full force for the first time. For them, this will be a big test of the work done in the past two years. Apart from this, there will be an opportunity for the Aam Aadmi Party to spread its political roots in the villages through panchayat and other local elections. If the Aam Aadmi Party is successful in this, then they can enter the next year’s Lok Sabha elections with full vigor. But if the party is dishonored in the elections, the stakes can be reversed.

Local elections are a big opportunity for Congress and Akali Dal to make a comeback. The roots of both the parties are considered to be very strong in the villages, especially the Akali Dal which has got the tag of a rural party. If Akali Dal makes a comeback with excellent performance in Panchayats, Zilla Parishads, party leaders and workers will be encouraged and they can enter the fray with enthusiasm in the Lok Sabha elections. Similarly, it is a good opportunity for the Congress to prove its mettle while being in the opposition party. If the Congress does well in the panchayat elections, it will not only be able to come out strong in the Lok Sabha elections, but also in the state, it will be able to give a tough challenge to the Hon’ble government.

The BJP had the status of an urban party till now, but the way the party under the leadership of Sunil Jakhar is trying to stand on its own in the rural areas, the Panchayati, Zilla Parishad, Panchayat Samiti elections will be a big test for the BJP. If the BJP does not win the elections but does well in the vote share, it will not be less than a victory for the BJP.

All in all, the local elections of Punjab will determine the position of each party, that is, how much water it is in. Elections will decide how strong AAP has become among the public in 2 years, with the return of Akali Dal and Congress, rural areas will be challenged to save their reputation. For the BJP, these elections will decide where the party stands in rural areas. The future political strategy of BJP will also be decided on the basis of this.
