The dates of Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Punjab will be announced. The State Election Commission has called a press conference this afternoon. With this announcement, the election code will come into force across the province tomorrow. It is believed that the elections can be held by December 14. However, the process of reservation of wards has been completed in all the districts.
23 Zilla Parishads and 154 Panchayat Samitis
Elections are scheduled for a total of 23 Zilla Parishads and 154 Panchayat Samitis in Punjab. The Rural Development and Panchayat Department has completed all legal procedures for these elections. All procedures including revision of electoral rolls have been completed. This time, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad elections in Punjab are being held much later than the scheduled time.
These elections will be conducted on the basis of the January 2025 voter list. The Rural Development and Panchayat Department has filed an affidavit in the High Court saying that these elections will be held by December 5. These elections were postponed due to reorganization of blocks and subsequent floods in Punjab.
Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad elections were held in Punjab in 2018. These were pending for a long time. Now, these elections are being considered as semi-finals for the 2027 assembly elections. Elections usually go in favor of the ruling party, but this time with only 13 months left for the assembly elections, these elections are being considered very important.
