At least 22 militants of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed during an intelligence-based operation by security forces in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The media unit of the country’s army gave this information. He said the operation was carried out on Wednesday in Dera Ismail Khan district of the North-West Province based on information that terrorists associated with “Fitnah al-Khawarij” were present there. ‘Fitna al-Khawarij’ is the term used by Pakistani authorities to refer to terrorists of the banned TTP.

The army said that the security forces effectively targeted the terrorist hideout and 22 terrorists were killed after a fierce exchange of fire. He said that an operation is being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists present in the area.
The intelligence operation was conducted on reports of the presence of members of the Pakistani Taliban, or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in KP’s Dera Ismail Khan district, which has increased its attacks on security forces in recent years.

The military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), described the killed suspects as militants.“A sanitization operation is being conducted to eliminate any militants found in the area,” ISPR said in a statement.
KP, bordering Afghanistan, has seen an increase in militancy in recent years, with the TTP and other militant groups frequently targeting security forces convoys and check-posts, as well as carrying out targeted killings and kidnappings of law enforcers and government officials.
Earlier in the day, officials said three Pakistani policemen were killed when terrorists attacked a security checkpoint in KP’s Hangu district.
Islamabad has long been accusing Kabul of allowing its land and India to support terrorist groups including TTP for attacks against Pakistan. Kabul and New Delhi have consistently denied this.
A surge in terrorist violence last month led to deadly clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The two countries agreed to a ceasefire in Doha on October 19, but tensions still remain between the neighbours.
