8 ex-officers of the Indian Navy sentenced to death in Qatar, accused of espionage

Death Penalty : A Qatari court on Thursday (October 26) sentenced eight former Navy personnel to death in espionage cases. Regarding this, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement saying that we are shocked by the death penalty decision and we are waiting for a copy of the detailed decision.

“We are in touch with the family members and the legal team and are exploring all legal options,” the ministry said. We consider this matter very important and are monitoring it closely. All consular and legal assistance will continue to be provided. This decision will also be taken up with the Qatari authorities.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying that these eight people work for Qatar-based Al Dhara Company. In fact, these eight Indians have been imprisoned in Qatar since October 2022 last year.

What is the charge?
According to news agency ANI, Qatar has accused ex-Navy personnel of spying on its submarine program. India was trying to get them released through consular access.

According to the family members, they were informed that the emir of Qatar is very kind and hope that their petition will be considered. Most of the ex-officers are above 60 years of age. So the case has adversely affected his health. There is also no clarity about the charges leveled against them.
