The European Union together with Kosovo’s government has awarded a total of 45 new scholarships for Master’s degree studies in the European Union to current and future civil servants from Kosovo.

The scholarships have been awarded following the Young Cell Scheme that attempts to further improve the work of public administration as well as the services it offers to Kosovars, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The European Union Ambassador in Kosovo, Tomas Szunyog, said that education is key to advancing Kosovo’s development in all spheres of life, taking also into account its EU integration path.

“I am happy to see that the number of young people benefiting from our Master’s scholarship program is increasing year after year and that by working as civil servants they are bringing about a positive change in the way Kosovo’s public administration functions,” Szunyog pointed out.

He added that the European Union will continue to offer its support to the Balkan country in developing a more transparent, professional, and accountable public administration, through this scholarship program as well as the ongoing assistance with the public administration reform.

In 2004, the European Union started to support the master-level of education of civil servants in Kosovo and since then a total of 364 civil servants were educated in fields deemed most necessary by the government through a total of 12 rounds of scholarships.

Through a statement, the European Union Office in Kosovo noted that the European Union’s contribution to the Young Cell Scheme will increase to a total of 15.3 million euros including the 13th, 14th as well as 15th rounds of scholarship to be finished by 2026.

It has been noted that by 2026 a total of 470 young people should benefit. In 2011, the government of Kosovo started co-founding the scheme while it is supporting rounds 12 to 15 with a total of 2.5 million.

Kosovo Deputy Minister of Interior, Bardhyl Dobra, said that the country’s government has understood its obligation of investing in the professionalization of the country’s public administration and providing the needed tools for them in order to carry out their duties in an effective way.

“This program is important in the sense that its influence affects many aspects of personal and social development. A professional public administration promotes transparency and accountability in the government. It ensures that policies and programs conform needs of the citizens,” Dobra pointed out.

In order to benefit from this program, applicants should work for one of the institutions in Kosovo for at least three years following graduation.
