Of a total of 10,499 people who acquired Luxembourgish nationality last year, 40 per cent of them have obtained nationality by recovery, meaning that they have national roots in Luxembourg, that date back to January 1, 1900.

Such conclusions have been reached in the recent report of Virgule, while it has been emphasized that this continues to remain among the most popular ways of acquiring nationality in Luxembourg by only having a Luxembourgish ancestor, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

It has been emphasized that this makes it possible to derogate from the linguistic examination which at present is essential for all those who plan to acquire citizenship in this country.

The report also revealed that since 2009, in which year this measure was officially introduced, a total of 36,005 internationals benefited from this policy.

But, having a Luxembourgish ancestor in order to claim citizenship in this country will no longer be eligible. Authorities in this country confirmed that the law that authorized the filing of this type of petition was eligible until the end of 2018.

Still, those concerned will have additional time in order to validate their approach to the civil register, such an announcement was confirmed by the Ministry of Justice.

The figures provided by the same source revealed that of a total of 10,499 people who benefited from Luxembourgish citizenship last year, citizens of the following countries benefited the most:

Brazil (3,275), Portugal (1,227), France (1,191), the United States (889) Belgium (551), Germany (289), Italy (273), Cape Verde (186), Russia (175), Montenegro (172), Syria (172).

The same Ministry reported that 5,193 people obtained nationality by option, while a total of 4,273 through reclamation and 1,033 by naturalization.

In addition, the data provided by the Ministry of Justice brought to light the fact that just over 6,800 people became citizens of Luxembourg in 2022, still, it was emphasized that there was noted a decline of more than 25 per cent in comparison to the figures registered in 2020 in which year as of 9,400 people acquired nationality in Luxembourg.

โ€œBecause of restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic lots of candidates [wanting citizenship] living abroad were unable to travel to the Grand Duchy to do the formal citizenship process. These are principally [citizenship] candidates from Brazil and the United States,โ€ the Ministry of Justice stressed regarding the issue.

The same Ministry confirmed that Luxembourgish nationality can be acquired through naturalization while emphasizing that soon after applying the petitions filed under the same purpose are reviewed by the Ministry of Justiceโ€™s Nationality Office.
